A Contemporary Muslim Intellectual Salon

Conversations worth having.

The Salon brings Muslims together for thoughtful conversations about faith, psychology, relationships, culture, and the questions we don’t always have space to ask.

A woman and young girl sitting on a couch, holding hands and looking down with somber expressions. The woman is wearing a patterned headscarf, and the girl is wearing a peach-colored headscarf. The setting is a cozy living room with a bookshelf and plants in the background.

Do Boundaries Work in Muslim Families?

What happens when modern ideas about boundaries meet families built around loyalty, obligation, sacrifice, and interdependence?

We’ll explore guilt, privacy, parental expectations, emotional cutoff, family responsibility, and what healthy differentiation can look like in Muslim families.

When Communities Protect Harm

Why do communities sometimes protect the person or institution causing harm instead of the person naming it? We’ll explore loyalty, reputation, silence, belonging, accountability, and what happens when preserving the community becomes more important than confronting harm.

A woman wearing a hijab and cream-colored sweater sitting on a bench, reading a book, with a cup of coffee and another closed book on a wooden table in front of her.

Is it Islam or Culture?

We often hear, “That’s culture, not Islam.” But is the distinction really that simple? We’ll explore how religion and culture shape one another, how practices become labeled “Islamic,” and who gets to decide where culture ends and religion begins.

The image shows an entryway with a wooden door open to the outside. There are several framed artworks or calligraphy pieces on the wall. A coat rack holds a hat and a few jackets. A shoe rack with multiple pairs of shoes and slippers is next to a small table draped with a cloth. There are slippers and shoes scattered on the floor, and a rug near the door. The lighting is warm and dim.

When Islam Is Used to Harm

How do we recognize when religious guidance crosses into coercion or control? We’ll explore obedience, marriage, gender, family authority, shame, and the difficult line between sincerely held religious beliefs and the use of religion to justify harm.

This isn’t a lecture.

Circles are facilitated, salon-style discussions that bring Muslims together to think through questions about faith, psychology, relationships, culture, and modern life.

Come with your experiences, your questions, and your willingness to think alongside other people.
